Small Scale Poultry Production: English, Spanish, French In an age when the poultry industry is rapidly expanding throughout the world, what is it that motivates veterinarians and others to write books aimed at helping small producers or families to raise chickens? Dr. Marion Hammarlund writes: “I am always impressed with the value of some chickens for a family”. He is one of the authors of a booklet on poultry production entitled Raising Healthy Poultry Under Primitive Conditions. With support from the American Association of Avian Pathologists the booklet has been translated into Spanish and is entitled “Crianza de Aves de Corral - Saludables bajo conditions primitivas”. The booklet is available for $11.50 US (includes postage) from Christian Veterinary Mission, Division of World Concern. Box 33000. Seattle, Washington 98133. Dr. Richard J. Julian commented: “After seeing hens raising only 2 or 3 of a hatch in many 3rd world countries, I decided to write a booklet that might be of help. It has more information on alternate feeds, disease and incubation than other aids”. Publication of the booklet was supported by the Foundation of the 23 rd World Veterinary Congress, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It is available free of charge in Spanish and will soon be available in English and French. Dr. Gonzolo J. Diaz co-authored the Spanish edition. The booklet is entitled “Poultry Husbandry”; French - “La Régie de l’Élevage des Volailles”; Spanish - “Guía de Producción Aviar”. It can be requested from: Dr. Richard Julian
To alleviate poverty in parts of Argentina, the government supported INTA organization developed a program called “pro-huerta” or pro-gardening. The program helps families produce gardens and maintain a small flock of chickens. Surplus produce from gardens is to go to the chickens. A dual purpose color sexed bird is made available to families. A booklet on poultry production entitled (Spanish) “La cria casera de gallinas” is made available to those on the program without charge. Cecelia Villat, a veterinarian and one of the authors, commented that her heart is in the pro-huerta program. The booklet includes useful information on disease control. Well designed sketches and cartoons make it user friendly. For information contact: Alfredo Galli: Sonia Canet: |
